Preschool Craft: Sweet Flower Gardens

In this preschool craft, kids make flower gardens as they explore the parable of the farmer and the seed.

Scripture: Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23; Luke 8:4-15

Supplies:

  • foam bowls (1 per child)
  • crayons
  • various colors of construction paper, including green
  • lollipops (3-4 per child)
  • tape

Easy Prep:

  • Cut green construction paper into rectangles that are roughly 1×3 inches.
  • Make a sample craft to show kids.

Make Flowers

Have kids tear shapes out of various colors of construction paper. They’ll each need about eight shapes. Show them an approximate size and shape to aim for that will fit well on the lollipop as petals, but it’s okay if they vary.

Have children use crayons to decorate their petals. Then have them poke two construction paper shapes onto each lollipop stick, followed by a green rectangle. If the pieces slide down away from the lollipop, wind tape around the “stem” under the leaves.

Make a Garden

Have each child color an upside-down bowl to be the “garden.” Many kids will choose brown or green, but let kids be creative and use fun colors of their choice. Then have kids poke the “stems” through the bowls to make their flower gardens—they should be able to fit four flowers per bowl.

Talk About It

Say: Just like flowers grow in a garden, Jesus grows us!

Ask:

  • What are some other things that grow in a garden?

Say: A lot of things can grow from seeds. And like some seeds grow into beautiful flowers, Jesus grows us and helps our hearts grow more beautiful and kind. He can help us learn to share.

Have kids talk about the people they can share their lollipop gardens with. Then encourage children to take their gardens home and share the lollipop flowers.
