Preschool Craft: The Widow’s Offering

In this craft, kids will explore the value of giving as they discover the story of the widow’s offering and make coin wristbands.

Scripture: Mark 12:41-44; Luke 21:1-4

Supplies:

  • colored construction paper
  • large plastic coins (1 per child)
  • washable markers
  • stickers
  • clear packing tape
  • Glue Dots or glue sticks
  • transparent tape

Easy Prep:

  • Cut the construction paper into strips about 1½x7 inches long. Make 1 paper strip for each child.
  • Make a sample craft to show kids.

Tip:

Let older kids (ages 6-7) each cut out the wristband from the construction paper, making sure it will wrap all the way around their wrists.

The Widow’s Offering

Say: A woman who didn’t have a lot of money gave Jesus two coins when she was at church. Two coins doesn’t seem like a lot, but Jesus loved her gift! Other people gave more money, but this woman gave what little she had with a happy heart—and Jesus loves givers who have happy hearts! Have children each make a heart shape with their hands.

We can remember that even if we don’t feel like we have a lot, we can still share what we do have with other people. We can share our toys with our sisters, brothers, or friends; we can spend time with someone who might be sad; or we can even just share a smile. Let’s make a coin wristband to remember that Jesus loves givers like the woman wo gave what she had.

Make Wristbands

Show children the sample craft.

Give each child a strip of paper and a plastic coin. Help children each glue a plastic coin to the middle of the paper, which will be the wristband. Then children can decorate the paper strip by coloring and adding stickers.

When they’re finished decorating, place a piece of clear packing tape over each entire wristband so that it won’t tear and so that the plastic coin stays in place. Help children put the bands around their wrists and tape the bands together with a piece of transparent tape.

Point out that there’s only one coin on each wristband, and the woman in the Bible story didn’t have very much either…but she gave what she had to God with a happy heart!
