Palm Sunday Devotion for All Ages: True Worship

In this Palm Sunday devotion, children will offer worship to the greatest celebrity of all—Jesus.

Scripture: Mark 11:1-11

You’ll need:

  • Bible
  • green paper
  • colored paper

Palm Sunday Devotion

Open your Bible to Mark 11:1-11 and show kids the words.

Say: On Palm Sunday we remember when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. The Bible says that huge crowds were excited and waiting for him as he entered the city.

Ask:

  • When have you been part of a huge crowd? What was it like?

Say: Let’s see what it might’ve been like to be part of the crowd that followed Jesus on Palm Sunday.

Form two groups. Give kids in one group each a green sheet of paper to represent the palms. Give kids in the other group each a colored sheet of paper to represent the coats. Then have kids spread out around the room. Stand in the center of the room.

Read Mark 11:8.

Say: The people in the crowd laid palm branches and coats on the road as Jesus rode through the city. They did this to praise him and show him honor. Have kids wave their green papers in the air and place the colored papers and green papers on the ground as they move toward the center of the room, surrounding you.

Read Mark 11:9-10.

Say: The crowd surrounded Jesus. Then they shouted, “Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” Let’s shout, too! Have kids shout “Praise God! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” Then have kids sit.

Real Life Application

Ask:

  • Tell about a celebrity you’d be super excited to see in person.
  • How does the way you’d treat that celebrity compare to the way you treat Jesus each day?

Say: People tend to worship celebrities whether they’re singers, actors, or athletes. But Jesus is the only one worthy of our worship, and we can worship him every day. We can worship Jesus by singing, praying, or serving him. Let’s worship Jesus together with a praise prayer right now.

Have kids form a circle. Ask each child to name something he or she loves or knows about Jesus and then give the person to the right a high-five. Continue around the circle until everyone has shared.

Then pray: Dear Jesus, we love you and praise you. Thank you for [name some of the things the kids said]! Amen. End by having a big round of applause for Jesus.
