Elementary Children’s Message: Pray About Everything

In this children’s message, kids discover what it means to talk with God and pray about everything while they explore a passage in Philippians.

Scripture: Philippians 4:4-7

You’ll need:

Read the Scripture

Have children sit in a circle or around tables. Open your Bible to Philippians 4:4-7. Show children the words and tell them the Bible is God’s special book.

Say: The Apostle Paul wrote a letter encouraging people to pray. When we pray, we talk with God.

Read Philippians 4:4-7.

Pray About Everything

Say: God welcomes our prayers all the time, for everything, so we can connect with God and build a relationship with him.

Hold up the handout.

Say: We can be thankful for everything. Point to the “THANK YOU” on the handout. God invites us to ask for things we need. Point to the “I NEED.” God even wants to talk with us about when we disobey him or when we do something that hurts ourselves or others. We can say, “I’m sorry.” Point to the “I’M SORRY.”

Now let’s spend some time in groups drawing pictures to remind us of things we’re thankful for, things we need, and things we’re sorry about.

Give each child a handout and form three groups. Assign each group one of the prayer types, and have kids circle it on their handouts. Then ask them to flip over their handouts and write about or draw pictures of things based on the prayer topic you gave them: things they’re thankful for, things they want and need, or things they’re sorry for. Encourage them to talk with each other about what they’re drawing.

After completing the handout, have everyone sit in a circle or around tables and share their drawings with the rest of the group.

Ask:

  • What does it mean to you to be thankful?
  • Why do you think God sometimes says “no” when we ask for something we want or need?
  • Why is it important to say we’re sorry to God?

Say: God wants us to be thankful, ask for things, and say we’re sorry when we mess up. No matter what, God wants us to tell him everything.

Closing Prayer

Lead kids in motions while you pray, starting with prayer hands.

Say: Dear God, we thank you for sending your Son, Jesus, for being an incredible God, and for listening to us (cup hands around ears). We know we have so many needs (hold hands out, palms up). Please continue to meet our needs and answer our prayers (put your hands on your heart). We’re sorry for hurting others and disobeying you. We love you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
