Nursery Activity for Easter: Sing and Celebrate
The spring season brings so many ways to celebrate and remember God’s goodness: Lent, Palm Sunday, and Easter…to name a few! While it’s too early for the kids in your nursery to grasp the significance of Easter, we can make celebrating Jesus a natural part of their lives. In this nursery activity for Easter, you’ll sing songs and lead a brief activity about how Jesus sets us free.
Nursery Activity for Easter: Sing “My Jesus”
Sing “My Jesus” to the tune of “A Sailor Went to Sea Sea Sea” anytime during the lesson. Even seemingly simple actions can aid in your babies’ spiritual growth. Babies love to hear your voice as you make eye contact with them. Babies also love to move and stretch their bodies. Sit with an infant or toddler. The first time you sing the song, hold the baby’s hands and clap with the repetition of words on each line. The next time, choose another movement, such as waving the infant’s hands three times or patting his or her head three times.
My Jesus sets me free, free, free.
He frees us: you and me, me, me.
Just ask him, and you’ll see, see, see.
That Jesus sets us free, free, free.
(Repeat.)
Afterward, say: JESUS SETS US FREE.
Nursery Activity for Easter: Sing “J-E-S-U-S”
Sing “J-E-S-U-S” to the tune of “Bingo” anytime during the lesson. As you sing, hold a baby in your lap, and help him or her do the motions in parentheses.
God the Father sent his Son,
And Jesus was his name—yes!
J-E-S-U-S! (clap hands together for each letter)
J-E-S-U-S! (pat head for each letter)
J-E-S-U-S! (pat knees for each letter)
He came to set us free—yes!
Afterward, say: JESUS SETS US FREE.
Tell Babies About Jesus’ Life and Love
You’ll need:
Hold a baby in your lap, facing you. Place a small blanket loosely over the baby’s head, only partially covering his or her face.
Ask: Where’s [baby’s name]?
Quickly pull the blanket off the baby’s head, and say: [Baby’s name] is free! Jesus sets [baby’s name] free! JESUS SETS US FREE!
Hold a baby in your lap. Say the following action rhyme. Do the motions in parentheses with the baby.
One, two, three, four, five. (hold baby’s hand, and point to each finger as you count)
God’s Son, Jesus is alive! (hold baby’s hands in your hands, and gently wave their hands in celebration)
Jesus loves you, yes I know (cup baby’s hands around his or her mouth, and pretend to shout the words)
You are loved from head to toe! (tap both of baby’s hands on his or her head, then toes.)
We are happy as can be. (clap baby’s hands together)
Our friend, Jesus, sets us free, yippee! (extend baby’s arms out wide, and show a big smile)
Afterward, say: JESUS SETS US FREE.
