President’s Day Children’s Message: Honest Abe Bracelets

In honor of the United States’ Presidents’ Day, use this children’s message to celebrate the Christian character of a great American leader, Abraham Lincoln.

For each child, you’ll need:

  • six pennies,
  • a strip of 3×11-inch clear contact paper,
  • a 11⁄2×11-inch white paper strip, and
  • an adhesive-backed Velcro fastener strip.

You’ll also need:

  • a Bible and
  • scissors.

Print the text of Luke 16:10, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much,” on one side of each paper strip.

Help children each line six pennies along the long edge of their contact paper. Then lay the paper strip, printed side up, on the six pennies. Fold over the contact paper to cover the paper strip. Seal the edges and trim away any excess. Fit the bracelet to each child’s wrist, and attach the Velcro strip.

Then relate this story about Honest Abe: When Abraham Lincoln was a boy, he was very poor. One of his family’s prized possessions was the Bible. Lincoln loved to read the Bible. The truths he learned in it stayed with him for a lifetime and helped make him one of the greatest presidents in American history.

Say: Before Lincoln became President, he owned a little store in Illinois. One day, a customer accidentally overpaid him six cents. When Lincoln discovered the extra money, he walked six miles to return it.

Ask:

  • What do you think about someone who’s so honest that he walked that far just to return six cents?
  • What would you have done if you had discovered the six cents?
  • How do you think the Bible shaped Honest Abe’s actions?
