New Year's Eve Party

NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY

Celebrate the new year with a party extravaganza activity!

Have kids in your church-and their friends-spend the night on New Year's at their Sunday school teachers' homes. Ahead of time, get your senior pastor's spouse to create a diversion so your pastor's family is out of the house around 9 p.m.

Then have all the kids and teachers meet at the senior pastor's house around 9:30 to decorate the inside of the house for the new year. Use balloons, streamers, and construction paper chains. Make signs with encouraging messages to your pastor, such as "Thanks for leading us into the ways of God!" or "Your sermons are HOT!"

Back at their teachers' homes, kids can ring in the new year with games, videos, and tons of snacks.

Have everyone meet at the church in the morning for breakfast-still in their pajamas. Give a wild and crazy nightshirt to the person with the most outrageous pajamas.

Lead kids in a brief devotion on Philippians 3:13-14: "Forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."

CAKE BAKE

Cake is a big thing around the world at New Year's. To ring in the new year in England and Scotland, people try to be the first to wish others a new year by delivering cake, bread, or cheese. To honor St. Basil, a fourth-century church father, the Greeks bake a cake or bread with a coin in it. The person who finds the coin is considered the luckiest in the coming year. And the Chippewa Indians greet guests at this time of year with cakes and kisses.

Begin your own cake-baking activity with this idea. Have children bring their favorite cake's ingredients and a cake pan to your church on the afternoon of New Year's Eve. Provide cake-deocorating supplies, such as icing, food coloring, decorator bags and tips, small candies, coconut, string licorice, and more. Have kids create confectionery trophies. Take a picture of each child with his or her cake. Then take children to deliver the cakes to the people they choose.
