Memorial Day Elementary Game: Matchbox Memorial
This low-energy Memorial Day elementary game will help your kids discover that Christians have heroes of faith—just like their country has national heroes.
Prepare for the Memorial Day Elementary Game
This Memorial Day elementary game is based on Hebrews 12:1-3.
You’ll need:
Before you play this game, have a list of Bible heroes ready to share. Check out Hebrews 11 for ideas.
Play the Memorial Day Elementary Game
Read aloud Hebrews 12:1-3. Ask students to sit in a circle facing in.
Say: On Memorial Day, Americans remember people who have served in the armed forces. Right now, let’s remember “heroes” in the Bible, too! Time and time again, God works through ordinary people to do extraordinary things. There are many examples in the Bible.
Name one such hero as an example. (David, with God’s help, was able to defeat Goliath.)
Ask if anyone can think of another person in the Bible. Roll the car to a child with his or her hand raised. That person will then share who he or she is thinking of and how that person teaches us something about God. Have children continue rolling the car to each other and taking turns sharing.
As kids share “heroes” in the Bible during this Memorial Day elementary game, write the Bible heroes’ names and what each person’s life can teach us about God on the bulletin board paper.
Continue until everyone who wants to share has had a turn. If some students are unable to think of people in the Bible, let them know that they can share about any person they know or know of who has taught them something about God—our heroes of faith aren’t always in the Bible.
Talk About It
After playing this Memorial Day elementary game, discuss the following questions with your students:
- Why should we remember people who have taught us something about God?
- How can remembering those people help us?
- What’s one new thing you learned about God from playing this game?
Say: The Bible tells us that we can find strength to keep following God by remembering the people who have followed God before us. God can teach us things through the lives of others we read about in the bible, and even through people we know who are following God now.
