In this Halloween game for kid’s ministry, elementary kids will have some foot-stompin’, balloon-poppin’ fun—all while discovering that God can take what’s bad and turn it around for good.

Prepare for the Elementary Halloween Game

You’ll Need:

• Bible (try this kid-friendly version!)
• dark-colored balloons
• wrapped candies (Jolly Ranchers work well)
• 2-foot lengths of string

 Quick Tips

• Prepare ahead! Before playing, push one wrapped piece of candy inside each balloon, inflate the balloons, and tie them off. Dark-colored balloons work better for this activity because the color prevents kids from seeing the candy. If you don’t have dark colors, use thicker balloons.
• Allergy Alert! Check with kids and parents about possible allergies to your chosen candy or latex.
• Some children may be sensitive to the loud sound of popping balloons. Before you launch the game, check in with kids and let them know they can play while covering their ears, if needed. Or offer sound-canceling headphones if you have some.

Play the Elementary Halloween Game

Gather kids together. Give each child a balloon and a piece of string. Help kids tie one end of the string to the balloon and the other end of the string to their ankle. Although kids might realize something is inside the balloons, don’t tell what it is.

Say: The object of this game is to pop everyone else’s balloon by stomping on them—while keeping your own balloon from being popped. Once your balloon pops, stop where you are and gather the leftover pieces from your popped balloon. Ready? Go!

Play until only one person is left with an unpopped balloon—then have him or her pop it. Once everyone’s balloon is popped, have kids “pop” their piece of candy in their mouths.*

*Warning! To avoid choking hazards, be sure to pick up pieces of broken balloons promptly.

Talk About It

Say: Even though having your balloon popped seemed like a bad thing, what popped out of your balloon was a good thing. In life, bad things happen. It might seem like nothing could ever come out of something bad. But here’s good news: God can take what’s bad and turn it around for good!

Have kids find a partner to discuss the following questions.

Ask:

• What were you thinking when your balloon popped and you discovered a treat inside?
• Tell about a time something bad happened in your life.
• What good, if any, do you think came out of that bad thing?

Read aloud Romans 8:28.

Say: Halloween might seem like a “bad day.” But like our game, something good can come out of something bad. Halloween is a great time to get to know your neighbors and to tell people about Jesus.

Jesus dying on the cross might’ve seemed like a bad thing—but really it was the most amazing thing ever. After Jesus died, he came back to life so that you and I can be forgiven and become friends with God forever. God took something bad and turned it into good, and he can do the same in our lives!
