Don’t worry! You won’t be eating locusts. You’ll need: a large bowl 12 ounces of butterscotch chips 12 ounces of Chinese noodles ½ cup peanut butter (You can use a 16-ounce bag of marshmallows instead of peanut butter if children are allergic to peanuts. Melt the marshmallows separately, then add the other ingredients.) Making Your Locust Legs for a John the Baptist Snack Melt the butterscotch chips and peanut butter together. Stir in noodles until they’re completely coated. Pour melted ingredients into a mixing bowl and have your child spoon individual “locusts” onto waxed paper. Allow the snacks to harden. This makes three to four dozen locusts. While the locust legs are drying, ask, “What would’ve happened if we left out one of the ingredients or ate one ingredient at a time rather than taking the time to read the recipe, prepare the mixture, and spoon the snacks out?” Read aloud Matthew 3:1-6 and 13-17. Say: God had a plan, too, before Jesus came. Why do you think God sent John the Baptist before Jesus? What might’ve happened if John the Baptist decided not to follow God’s ‘recipe’? When the snacks are dry, talk about what John the Baptist ate and wore. Pray: God, thank you for sending John the Baptist to make the way for Jesus. Help us listen to you and follow your recipe for our lives as best we can. We love you! In Jesus’ name, amen. Glynis Belec Drayton, Ontario Looking for more snack ideas?
