Engage With the Scripture
You’ll Need:
Lead the Activity
Read aloud Ephesians 3:18-21 from a Bible. Give each child the loop of string.
Lead them in this string verse:
Our family is like a caterpillar wrapped in God’s cocoon of love (loop string over both thumbs, then lay string over back of left hand);
with kind words and peaceful thoughts (little finger of right hand loops under strings between first finger and thumb of left hand, pull);
with blessings from above (little finger of left hand loops over and hooks strings from thumb of right hand, pull);
our family can turn into a beautiful butterfly (first finger and thumb of right hand lifts string on palm of left hand over all fingers on left hand and pull taut).
Make a Love Envelope Craft
You’ll Need:
- fortune cookies
- slips of paper
- pencils
- zip-close bags
Make the Craft
Have kids write each family member’s name and an encouraging note on a slip of paper. For example, kids may write, “Dad, thanks for making such good meals for me.” Help younger children write their notes. Insert each of the slips into a different fortune cookie—one to give to each family member. Then have kids put their cookies in a zip-close bag to take home. Let kids eat the leftover cookies.
Celebrate With Families
Get families together for an after-church Family Appreciation Dessert. Children can make and serve a simple dessert such as brownie sundaes or decorated cakes. Kids can present handmade awards and tell why they love each family member and they are thankful that God protects us.
