Faith to Move Mountains
Have kids sit around tables. Then open your Bible to Matthew 21:21-22. Show children the words and tell them the Bible is God’s special book.
Say: In our Bible passage, Jesus had just performed an amazing miracle that stunned his disciples. When they asked him about what happened, he surprised them again with these words.
Read the Scripture passage.
Ask:
- What do you think it means to have faith in God?
- As a follower of Jesus, what do you think this verse means to you today?
Say: Let’s do an activity to help us understand what this verse means. To do this, we’re going to make mountains.
Let kids make modeling dough from the flour, salt, and water. Have them mix the following ingredients together: 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt, and ½ to ¾ cup of water. This makes enough dough for four children, so multiply the recipe as needed.
Split the dough equally among the children. Instruct them to each shape their dough into a mountain.
Say: Think of a mountain-sized problem you might be facing today as you create your mountain. Allow time. If Jesus said we could move mountains, then we can certainly move the things that feel like mountains in our lives with God’s power.
Ask:
- Think about the “mountain” in your life. What would it look like for you to use God’s power to help you move that mountain?
- Why do you think Jesus didn’t say God would move that mountain for you?
- What ways can we work with God to move mountains in our lives?
Say: God is willing to help us handle the challenges in our lives if we have faith in him. It’s great to know that we don’t have to move mountains on our own.
Closing Prayer
Have kids form a circle holding their mountains.
Say: Dear God, we thank you that you are bigger than any mountains we face. You are so faithful. Help us to trust you in all things and to remember that we can place our faith and trust in you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
