Use this kids’ Sunday school lesson for Mother’s Day with elementary-age kids in your Sunday school. Find more great Sunday school lessons to help kids grow in their faith.

Introduce the Lesson

Easy Prep:

• Draw a door and windows on several assorted colors of construction paper to represent Bible-time homes.
• Hang these low enough for children to see in various places on the wall.
• Place many 8-ounce cups under each Bible-time house.
• Keep one cup for yourself.

Lead the Activity

As children arrive have them sit in a semi-circle on the floor. Hold a cup as you paraphrase the story of Elisha, the widow, and the oil pots from 2 Kings 4:1-7. Ask children to retrieve the “oil pots” from the Bible-time homes. Continue until all the cups are placed in the inner circle.

Ask: How did the mother in our Bible story save her family? What might’ve happened if the sons hadn’t obeyed their mother? What happens if we don’t obey our mothers?

Lead an “I Obey” Activity

You’ll Need:

• whiteboard and markers
• cups
• raw macaroni

Lead the Activity

Write “obey” on one half of a whiteboard and “disobey” on the other half. Set a cup under each word. Give children each a handful of raw macaroni and have them line up in front of the whiteboard. Tell them that you’ll read a statement and they should place one macaroni in the cup that best represents how they respond—whether they obey or disobey. Then they should go to the end of the line. Allow all children to respond to each statement. Use the statements below.

When my mother asks me to…

• clean my room
• turn off the television
• help with the dishes
• take out the trash
• stop fighting with my brother or sister
• tell the truth
• go to bed
• brush my teeth
• eat my vegetables

After the activity, see which cup has the most macaroni. Then read aloud Ephesians 6:1.

Say: God has given parents the task of teaching children right from wrong. Children have the responsibility to obey their parents.

Make a “Jug of Love” Craft

You’ll Need:

• plain paper cup (1 for each child)
• glitter and sequins
• Hershey’s Kisses
• construction paper (1 sheet per child)
• hole punch
• yarn

Make the Craft

Give each child a plain paper cup. Have the children decorate their cup with glitter and sequins. Fill each child’s cup with a few Hershey’s Kisses. Encourage children to decorate a small piece of construction paper for a card and write the note: “A kiss and a hug in a jug.” Then have children punch a hole near the top of their cup and card and attach the two with yarn. Tell kids to take their cups home and give them to their mothers for Mother’s Day.

Eat a Snack

You’ll Need:

• sliced raisin bread
• butter
• cinnamon
• heart-shaped cookie cutters

Lead the Activity

Help children cut a heart shape in their raisin bread. Then spread butter on the bread. Sprinkle with a little cinnamon. Tell kids that this is a snack they could make for their mothers today (with a little help from Mom).
