Elementary and Preteen Bible Message: Pray on Election Day
Use this simple (and delicious!) Bible message on Election Day to teach elementary and preteen kids about honoring leadership with prayer.

Vote for Pretzels
Say: Election Day is coming up. It’s a day when grown-ups vote for people to lead us. I thought I’d let you vote on something, too—for a pretzel! I have two kinds.
Hold up a bag of one pretzel type in each hand.
Ask: Which pretzel type do you think is best—sticks or knots?
Say: If you’d like to vote for this kind of pretzel, (indicate the pretzel bag in one of your hands) get up and hop in place on one foot. If you’d like to vote for this kind of pretzel, (indicate the other bag of pretzels) do jumping jacks in place.
Tally the votes. If it’s a tie, cast your own vote. Announce the winner.
Say: Some of you didn’t get the choice you wanted as a result of our pretzel election. And sometimes the leader who is elected isn’t who some people wanted to lead them. I’m going to pass out the winning pretzels for you to eat while I read what God has to say about people who lead us.
Pass out the winning pretzels.
Read What the Bible Says
Read aloud Titus 3:1.
Say: When you’re “subject” to someone, you obey him or her. That means that this verse is saying to obey people who lead us—even the ones we didn’t vote for. And even the ones we don’t like very much.
Ask:
- Who do you obey each day?
- Why does God want us to obey our leaders?
Say: God gives us parents and teachers to obey. We have leaders who run our country who we can honor too. One way that all of us can honor the people who will run our cities, states, and country is to pray for them. Let’s say a prayer asking for God’s blessings on our leaders. I’ll say one thing and then when I point to you, you can respond with, “Bless them, Lord!”
Dear God,
We pray for our leaders today. (Bless them, Lord!)
Please help them in every way. (Bless them, Lord!)
Be near them, dear Lord, we pray. (Bless them, Lord!)
Please guide what they do and say. (Bless them, Lord!)
