Children’s Devotion: What’s a Leader?

In this children’s devotion, kids take guesses on an unseen object as they explore the meaning of leadership.

Scripture: 1 Kings 3:9-10

You’ll need:

• Bible
• a small object

Children’s Devotion: What’s a Leader?

Keep the object hidden from the kids.

Say: Everyone close your eyes, and then I’ll hold up an object. You’ll call out guesses of what the object is. You can’t touch the object, and there won’t be any hints. Okay, any guesses?

Let kids guess as they keep their eyes closed. After a few guesses, see if kids are ready for some hints. Choose one child to open eyes and give clues to the other kids.

Say: Our leader will give clues to help you guess.

When someone correctly guesses the object, have all children open their eyes.

Ask:

• How did you feel when you couldn’t guess the object?
• How did you feel when our leader helped you guess?

Read aloud 1 Kings 3:9-10.

Ask:

• Tell about a time you couldn’t do something on your own.

Say: Leaders can help us do things we can’t do on our own.

Ask:

• What are other things about a person that show they’re a leader?
• How can you show that God’s your leader when you’re at school or with your friends?

For Extra Impact:

• Ask: Why is it important to ask God to help us know right from wrong?
• Ask: Why do you think it pleases God when we ask for his help?
• Close in prayer, asking that God help kids turn to him for guidance.
