Preschool Activity: Come Out, Jonah!
To prepare, fold a piece of construction paper in half, and cut out a simple, large fish shape. (Download a template of both the fish and man figures.) You’ll end up with two fish that you can tape together, leaving the mouth with a large opening. Next, cut out a felt stick-figure man that’ll fit easily inside the fish through the mouth opening.
With kids, put the man in the fish and say: Jonah was in the fish’s belly. Come out, Jonah! That fish spit out Jonah! Shake the felt man out.
Give each child a turn to hold the fish and shake out the cutout man from the fish’s mouth as you repeat the phrases. Monitor to ensure the pieces don’t end up in anyone’s mouth.
You can finish off this activity by reading the story of Jonah in a children’s Bible. Try to find a Bible that includes illustrations to help children better remember the story.
