Halloween Elementary Sunday School Lesson: Jesus cares when we feel afraid.
1. Care Call
Bring in several items that represent caring professionals, such as a stuffed animal for a veterinarian. Ask kids to match the item with the profession. Discuss how each person cares for something or someone.
2. Bible Activity: Balloon Bash
Say: Jesus cares for us when we feel afraid.
You’ll need:
- 1 inflated and tied-off balloon for each child except 1
- media player and speaker(s)
Play music.
Say: Keep your balloons in the air until the music stops. When the music stops, grab one balloon. Whoever’s left without a balloon sits out for one round.
Turn off the lights and play several times.
After the game, say: Sometimes dark places are scary.
Ask: Who can tell about a time you’ve felt scared? Who did you turn to for help?
Read aloud Mark 4:35-41. Ask:
- Why do you think Jesus’ friends turned to him when they were scared?
- Why do you think Jesus helped them?
Say: Jesus’ friends felt afraid. But they were safe because Jesus was with them. Jesus is always with us, too.
3. Halloween Craft: No Fear Faces
You’ll need:
- copies of a simple eye mask template (do a quick online search)
- construction paper
- scissors
- decorating materials (washable markers, glue sticks, yarn, glitter, feathers)
- elastic bands
- stapler
Say: Sometimes we hide our true feelings when we’re afraid. That’s like wearing a mask. Let’s make masks to show how we feel when we’re afraid.
Have each child trace the eye mask template onto a piece of construction paper. Make sure kids cut holes so they can see through the mask. Then have children decorate their masks as they’d like with the various supplies you’ve gathered. After their masks are finished, help children staple an elastic band to the edges of the mask so they can wear it.
Have children put on their masks and talk about things that are scary for them, such as giving an oral report or being home alone. Then have children take off their masks as you read aloud Psalm 56:3. Reinforce the idea that we don’t need to be afraid because Jesus is always with us.
4. Prayer
Form a circle and close in prayer, thanking Jesus for caring for us when we’re afraid and for always being with us.
5. Snack
You’ll need:
- apple slices
- peanut butter
- mini marshmallows
- blunt, disposable knives
Allergy Alert: Some children have food allergies that can be dangerous. Know your children, and consult with parents about allergies their children may have.
Have children spread peanut butter on their apple slices. Then have them stick four mini marshmallows to the peanut butter to make “smiles.” If you have even one child with a peanut allergy, simply forego the peanut butter. The marshmallows will still stick fairly well to the apples and look like teeth.
Say: We feel happy when God protects us and keeps us safe. When we feel happy, we smile. Turn and give each other a big smile.
Then enjoy eating your apple smile.
