Use this Preschool Sunday School Lesson, Mary and Martha, to help children learn to make time for Jesus. Find more great Sunday school lessons to help kids grow in their faith.

Bible Activity: Busy Bee

Choose a Leader. Have the children form a line facing the Leader.

Have the Leader say either “Martha was busy” or “Mary was quiet.” When “Martha” is said, have the Leader do an action such as run in place or turn around. The children in line should follow the Leader. When “Mary” is said, everyone should stand still. The Leader may try to trick the others by saying “Mary” and doing an action. Those who aren’t tricked remain in the game and the round begins again.

After the game, tell the children the story about Mary and Martha from Luke 10:38-42. Then choose a new Leader and play again.

Craft: Quiet as a Mouse

You’ll Need:

  • 6-inch, brown construction paper squares (1 per child)
  • small pink construction paper circles, each about the size of quarter (2 per child)
  • glue sticks (1 for every 2 kids)
  • washable fine-tipped markers
  • 3-inch pieces of yarn (1 per child)
  • tape

Have children each fold a square of construction paper into a triangle and stand the triangle on the table. The point resting on the table will be the mouse’s nose. Have the children glue two pink circle ears on to their mouse. Help children draw eyes and a nose. Give children each a yarn tail and small piece of tape to attach the tail to their mouse. Remind kids that they can be as quiet as a mouse to listen quietly to God’s Word—just as Mary did.

Snack

You’ll Need:

  • sliced bread
  • butter
  • disposable butter knives and spoons
  • honey

While kids spread the butter and honey on their bread, ask:

  • Which food do you think gives our bodies more of what we need—honey or bread?

Say: The Bible says in John 6:35 that Jesus is the bread of life. Spending time with Jesus feeds us important things we need, like his love and friendship. That fills up our hearts, kind of like how bread fills up our bellies.

Ask:

  • What are some things you’d like to do with Jesus this week to fill up your heart? Share a couple of your own simple ideas first to help kids think of things they can do with Jesus.

Close in prayer, asking Jesus to help kids spend quality time with him.

Thanks so much for these ideas! I was looking for a way to celebrate Martha’s feast day with my young daughter. One thing, though, I’d have to find something other than honey for the bread in order to make the point. If you look it up, you’ll discover incredible health benefits of raw honey. In fact, my husband and many other people use it medicinally, like apple cider vinegar. In fact, the activity confused me at first because if you consider the honey to be raw, as I did, then honey is by far the most nourishing! lol Well, thanks again and God bless!
