Special to God Children’s Message

Use this children’s message to show kids how to understand God’s love on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Theme: Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Text: 1 Samuel 16:7

Best for: Younger Children

Preparation: You’ll need a framed mirror.

The Message:

(Hold up the mirror so only you can look into it.) I’m looking at a picture of someone God says is very special. Would you like to see the picture? Okay, but I’ll show you only if you promise not to tell who’s in the picture. (Hold the mirror up to each child so only one child can see into it at one time.)

Did we all see the same person? Who did you see? God thinks we’re all special. God thinks you’re special.

Which child here do you think is God’s favorite child? God doesn’t have a favorite, does he?

The person you saw in the picture doesn’t look exactly like the other children. Some of you have dark hair; others have light hair. Some have dark skin; others have light skin. Some are tall; others are short. But no matter how you look, God thinks you’re special.

This week, we celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. He was a great man who helped our country realize how wrong it is to dislike someone because of the way that person looks. God told us that what makes us special is what’s inside, not how we look on the outside.

(Read the Scripture.)

Let’s thank God that he made each of us special and unique.

(Close in prayer.)
