5 Back-to-School Outreach Ideas for Your Children’s Ministry

With school back in full swing, now’s a great time to focus on outreach. Here are five simple, effective ideas that’ll help you and your kids reach out where they are…school!

According to a survey by the Center for the Study of Global Christianity, one in five non-Christians in the U.S. and Canada don’t know any Christians personally. It’s clear that we need to equip our kids to reach out into their communities and show Jesus’ love to others. Here are five simple back-to-school outreach ideas.

1. Start off Strong

Hold a no-strings-attached back-to-school night. Ask families and senior citizens in your church to donate baked goods for people to enjoy and volunteer their time the evening of the event. Have volunteers meet early at the school to set up refreshments and for a time of prayer. Pray for the school, staff, students, and families. Make sure your volunteers clean up afterward! (Check out this post for even more ideas your kids will love!)

2. Back-To-School Backpacks

One easy outreach standby has been collecting school supplies for kids. Here’s an easy way to give this classic outreach event an extra boost. Check out idea #5 to find a supply list with fun reminders to go with each item to show kids God’s love.

3. Don’t Forget Homeschool

“The back-to-school crowd is populated with a growing number of homeschooled kids who are very often some of the most involved members of your children’s ministry.” Check out this article by Michelle VanLoon for a look inside the church/homeschool connection.

4. Invite Teachers

Jake Senft, a friend in ministry from Ohio, shared this idea for a school teacher appreciation day. Check the link for all the details of Jake’s ministry’s event.

5. College-Bound

Another friend in ministry, Lisa Shelor from Virginia, shared with us how her kids loved making care packages for college students who’re going back to school. The added benefit? Many of those college students ended up volunteering at their children’s ministry when they returned home!
