The second in a kids’ book series on running track, Patina comes from New York Times best-selling author Jason Reynolds. The title character is new to the track team. Not only is she attempting to run fast enough to help her middle school track team make the Junior Olympics, she’s also attempting to outrun her personal demons. Full of important messages for kids ages 10 and above, Patina allows readers to enter the main character’s world and family of mixed races.
Our Take on Patina
There’s currently a lot of discussion about race and gender equality in the word. This kids’ book creates an opportunity for children to talk about common social issues. The main character experiences issues with trust, which opens the door for preteens to discuss similar struggles in their lives.
