Here’s your latest Keeping Current music review for March and April of 2019: Halsey.
Twenty-four-year-old singer Halsey made the Billboard Hot 100 five times in 2018. Plus her song “Without Me” peaked at number 1 in early 2019. In 2018, she performed at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, and the Latin Grammys. In addition to her musical presence, she is an activist for suicide prevention because of her own experiences and struggles with bipolar disorder.
Our Take on Halsey
Halsey’s lyrics and videos are on the dark side and often marked “explicit” on YouTube. That’s not a surprise. For example, the popular “Without Me” video shows her taking shots and drinking liquor from the bottle. Additionally, she’s shown showering with a man in one scene and violently fighting with him in another, among other explicit scenes and language. While Halsey attempts to be a good role model as an advocate for suicide prevention (and we’re all for that), we don’t recommend Halsey’s new 2019 album because the mature content in her music and videos doesn’t reflect a good influence for preteens.
