12 Surprising Things Kids Have Learned From the 2016 Election

Those of us who care about children might be surprised to learn the 12 things kids have learned from this bizarre 2016 election.

This election. Moral decay seems to ooze from every commercial, tweet, debate, and soundbite. We worry about what our children are learning from the people who are supposed to be, well, presidential.

The truth is…the outrage from both candidates toward the other’s immoral behavior and our own chagrin over their behavior may be having the very effect we want for children. Actually, this post could be titled “Everything I Needed to Know About Life I Learned From the 2016 Election.”

Take a look at the 12 surprising things kids have learned from the 2016 election. From the very people whom we wish would model positive behavior.

  1. Don’t be mean.
  2. Don’t interrupt.
  3. Don’t lie.
  4. Don’t hate.
  5. Don’t say bad things about people.
  6. Don’t break your promises.
  7. Don’t neglect doing a good job.
  8. Don’t say things in secret that you wouldn’t say in public.
  9. Don’t be irresponsible.
  10. Don’t break the law.
  11. Don’t be prejudiced.
  12. Don’t be disrespectful.

By the way, this is not a partisan post. You decide which candidate(s) have taught kids these important lessons for the health of our society.

And good job to you parents, teachers, ministers, and more who are speaking out when the candidates’ behavior is unacceptable. Our kids are learning from us more than they are from them. Keep up the good work!

  1. If I may add, it is important for parents to also teach and model praying for our country and our government.

Betty, thank you for adding this. I totally agree! It’s all in God’s hands.

  2. Here’s what we should really learn:
    Be kind.
    Let others speak.
    Be honest.
    We are called to love.
    Judge not.
Let your yeses be yes and nos be nos.
    Do your best.
    Your words show your character!
Be responsible with the gifts you have been given.
    Rules keep us safe.
    We are all God’s children.
    Honor your father and mother.

Hi Christine, I love these things kids have learned… but what kids? I am hoping you have gathered this from real kids in some way.

  4. This is very helpful; with the election a week away, I plan to present this tomorrow. Thanks Christine!
