3 Children’s Ministry Activity Ideas for Your Nursery

Here are three children’s ministry activity ideas specially designed for your church nursery. These ideas talk about love and friendship and even include a service project!

3 Children’s Ministry Activity Ideas for Your Nursery

1. Tissue-Paper Hearts

Older toddlers will love this sensory craft that celebrates love.

You’ll need:

  • 1 large heart cutout per child
  • glue sticks
  • a variety of tissue paper cut into pieces

Work with one or two children at a time to ensure the paper doesn’t end up in their mouth. Say: God loves you. God loves everyone. We can make hearts and tell everyone about God.

Use a glue stick to dot glue all over one side of a heart cutout. Then let children choose tissue-paper colors to stick on the heart, covering it in colors. Once the tissue paper is attached, children can crinkle the edges, or they can leave the tissue pieces flat. When children have finished, encourage them to share their hearts with their families and say, “God loves me!”

2. We Love Our Friends

Use this action rhyme with toddlers as you talk about different ways we can love our friends, as Proverbs 17:17 reminds us that a friend loves at all times. Sing this song with children to the tune of “Skip to My Lou.”

I’m a friend and that is true. (point to self)

I’m a friend and that is true. (point to self)

I’m a friend and that is true. (point to self)

I’m a friend forever. (put hands on heart)

You’re a friend and that is true. (point to others)

You’re a friend and that is true. (point to others)

You’re a friend and that is true. (point to others)

You’re a friend forever. (put hands on heart)

I’m a friend and so are you. (hug self)

I’m a friend and so are you. (hug self)

I’m a friend and so are you. (hug self)

Let’s be friends together. (put hands on heart)

3. Baby-Food Drive

Consider sponsoring a baby-food drive for the food banks in your community.

Baby food is a consistent need at food banks, and many struggle to keep their shelves stocked with these vital goods. Create a collection point at a high-traffic location in your church. Post a sign inviting people in your church to donate baby and toddler goods, including formula, jars of food, rice cereal, electrolyte drinks, and more. Let families know you’re spreading love from your nursery ministry to the community. When the collection is over, invite parents to go with you as you donate the goods to the food bank.
