Why We Need to Say Goodbye to Self-Help

Once -upon -a -time -new -tv -seriesOver Christmas break/school break, we often binge on some TV series. This year it was Once Upon a Time--a show about fairy-tale characters who live under a curse and don't know who they really are until the curse is broken. They live powerless and adventure-less lives. Once the curse is broken, they live lives full of power and adventure.

This is true for us Christians. Jesus broke the curse that sin held over us. He's given us power that we cannot even fathom. He's assured us victory over every enemy. We are embroiled in a spiritual battle that we cannot see but we're aware of.

If these things are true (and they are), then why do I live as though I have no power? 2014 is the year that I'd like to live like the person God has made me to be--through Jesus.

God spoke to me recently through this passage: Zechariah 4:6-7 is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel--and to us. "It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven's Armies. Nothing, not even a mighty mountain, will stand in [your] way; it will become a level plain before [you]!"

There's an interesting scene in one episode of Once Upon a Time. The heroes are fighting off the forces of evil with swords, guns, and sheer will. But it's not enough. Finally, Emma (the "savior") believes in the power she has. She leans into it and accesses it. As a result, she fights on a spiritual rather than a physical level.

Now, I'm not a huge fan of "magic" shows, but I'm using this as an analogy. We can fight whatever demons we face in 2014 with New Year's resolutions, sheer will, self-help books, gritted teeth....or we can fight them in the power of the Spirit.

I don't even fully understand what this means but I hope you'll join me in leaning into this adventure God wants to take us on this coming year! I'm on an adventure to see the mountains in my life and ministry vanquished--not by might, not by power--but by the Spirit of the Living God!

Oh Yesss! We SO need to hear this. I think there are many of us who will join you, Christine, seeking victory first on our knees, and then doing His will, knowing that we are together in Jesus Christ's family/Body, and that we are all praying for each other, holding each other close to Him in His Love, asking for what's needed to see His kingdom manifested, so that Jesus may be known and glorified throughout the earth.
