What We Can Learn From Pope Francis

Time magazine: “For pulling the papacy out of the palace and
into the streets, for committing the world’s largest church to
confronting its deepest needs and for balancing judgment with
mercy, Pope Francis is Time’s 2013 Person of the Year.”

Why? What is it about Pope Francis that stands out in a secular
age filled with cynicism toward Christians, religion, and the

Pope Francis lives out his Christian faith without a hint of
hypocrisy or selfishness. This is compelling when a whopping 85
percent of people surveyed say that “church people are a bunch of
hypocrites,” according to a study quoted in Thom and Joani
Schultz’s book Why Nobody Wants to Go to Church
. And in the same book: 87 percent of
Americans label Christians as judgmental.

But this Pope is turning that around. He embodies what most
people believe Christianity should be about. He shows people what
Jesus is like when he washes the feet of a Muslim woman in prison.
When he embraces a severely disfigured man. When he blesses
children. When he refuses to judge gay people. When he eschews the
papacy apartment for a humble abode.

This humble man is showing all of us-Christians and not-what it
means to follow in Christ’s steps. I’m not a Catholic, but I have
to say I’m a big fan of this guy.

Even after getting the Time honor, Pope Francis said that he’s
not doing what he does for honors but if this helps get his message
out, then he’s happy.

He speaks the truth. He shows compassion. He reminds me of
