Use this LEGO®-themed volunteer kickoff event to connect and inspire your team for an awesome new year

Kick off your new ministry year with an “Everything Is Awesome” event in the fall to motivate your team for another year of service! You have news to share, training to impart, and appreciation to show—and you want to do that in a memorable way. In light of the 2014 hit movie The LEGO Movie and because LEGOs are universally known and enjoyed by just about everyone from young children to grandparents, a LEGO-themed volunteer kickoff is sure to energize the masses!

Awesome Decor

Use these LEGO-rific ideas throughout your entire décor.

Easy
Trace three circles across a sheet of copy paper to create a LEGO template. Photocopy the template onto red, blue, and yellow paper or card stock. On your main wall, build a “LEGO” cross by taping the colored papers to the wall. Vary colors to keep it lively. You can also use these “LEGOs” to completely cover a door or other furniture pieces so they look like they’re built from LEGOs.

Seat guests at rectangular tables covered with primary-color table covers. Use round plates in the same color as the table covers to add LEGO dots across the top of the table covers.

Intermediate
Replace the paper “LEGOs” described above with square disposable plates to give your wall designs a 3-D look. Glue two or four paper or felt circles to each plate. “Build” several designs throughout your meeting area, such as a stick-figure child, a huge cross, or the words “Awesome Volunteer Kickoff.”

Wrap a variety of large and extra-large boxes in bright, solid-colored paper. Glue same-colored circles to the boxes, and invite volunteers to work together to build structures with the boxes as they arrive.

Advanced
Make 3-D designs by gluing small, same-colored cups to square plates in place of the paper or felt circles used in the intermediate option. Rather than “building” generic designs on the wall, re-create your ministry logo using the “LEGO” plates.

Make a LEGO truck out of a large box to use as a photo booth. Here’s how: Cut apart one of the long legotrucksides of the box on three sides, leaving one short end attached to the box (use photo to the right as a guide). Fold the cut piece up at a slight angle to form a roof, and tape the free end to the main part of the box about halfway down the length of the box. This creates a roof on one end and an open truck bed on the other end. Cut rectangular holes in the roof to form front and rear windshields. Spray paint the whole truck one primary color, or wrap it using solid-colored paper. Use black and white paper plates to add tires, and use cups in the same color as your truck to create other features. Volunteers can enter the truck through the truck bed if you cut just that end piece down.

Use the “Everything Is Awesome” song from The LEGO Movie as background music for a slide show of pictures from your children’s ministry events.
