Preschool Sunday School Lesson

Take the Spooky Out of Halloween

To help take the “spooky” out of Halloween, use these Bible lessons for preschoolers for you Sunday school class. Plus, find more great Sunday school lessons to help kids grow in their faith.

1. Safety First

Show magazine pictures of things that may help children feel safe; for example, a picture of someone wearing a helmet while bike-riding. Have kids identify the item in the picture that would help them feel safe. Ask kids to name things that help them feel safe when they’re scared.

2. Light the Way

Say: Jesus cares for us when we’re scared. Gather children at one end of the room with you standing at the opposite end with a flashlight.

Say: When you see the light, come toward me. When the light goes off-stop.

When kids reach you, play again several times. And, for added fun, turn out the lights. *Say: Dark places can be scary. But just like this flashlight helped us find our way, Jesus helps us feel safe when we’re afraid.

Paraphrase Mark 4:35-41.

3. Pumpkin Glow

Cut apart cups of an egg carton to make a candle base. Poke a small hole in the bottom of each cup. Give each child one egg cup and one yellow pipe cleaner.

Have children each fold their pipe cleaner and put it through the base of the cup (see illustration). Kids can decorate their “candle” base with paints, glitter, macaroni, and dried pumpkin seeds. (Use markers to decorate Styrofoam bases.) Have children take their candles home and place them in a small carved pumpkin. Also, remind kids that Jesus is the light and takes care of us when we feel scared.

4. Jesus Is the Light

Lead children in singing the following words to the tune of “The Farmer in the Dell”:

Jesus is the light,

Jesus is the light,

Jesus is the light all right,

Jesus is the light.

5. Food For Thought

You’ll need: Apple slices, peanut butter, mini marshmallows, and blunt knives Directions: Have children spread peanut butter on their apple slices. Then have them stick four mini marshmallows to the peanut butter to make “smiles.”

Say: We feel happy when God protects us and keeps us safe. When we feel happy, we smile. Turn and give each other a big smile. Then enjoy eating your apple smile.
