A Service of Rededication

Margaret Hinchey

Christian education involves everyone: teachers, children, parents, church leaders, and congregation members. Before you kick off your new educational year, rededicate your church's Christian education ministry with this consecration service.

Pastor: Brothers and sisters in Christ, we are partners in the task of providing Christian education for the body of Christ. To remind us of that partnership and the importance of our roles in the process of Christian education, I ask you to share in a rededication to Christian education.

Christian Education (CE) Director: Will all those involved as leaders in our Christian education programs-Sunday school teachers, aides, superintendents, music leaders, and anyone else-please stand?

Pastor: You've been chosen to serve because of your love and concern for the gospel and for God's people, and because of your unique and effective skills and abilities. On behalf of our church, I now ask you:

*Will you strive for excellence in your teaching, remaining faithful to the message of God's love in Christ Jesus? Will you present that message with all the skills God has given you? Please answer: We will with the help of God.

*Will you model Christ's love, forgiveness, and selfless concern to your students and fellow workers? Please answer: We will with the help of God.

*Will you also be a student, searching the Scriptures and using the best of help available to you in your teaching? Please answer: We will with the help of God.

*Will you look to God, the author and replenisher of our faith, as you seek to carry out your ministry of teaching in this coming year, confident that your labor will not be in vain? Please answer: We will with the help of God.

*Please be seated.

CE Director: Will the parents of all children in our church's educational programs please stand?

Pastor: God has given to you the gift of children. God has entrusted to you the care and nurture of these children, which includes their Christian education. This congregation stands beside you in that task. On behalf of our church, I now ask you:

*Will you bring your child to church for worship and educational opportunities on a regular basis during this coming year? Please answer: We will with the help of God.

*Will you encourage your child at home through regular prayer and Bible study as a family? Please answer: We will with the help of God.

*Will you also participate in Christian education and parenting education opportunities that will enable you to be a faithful Christian parent? Please answer: We will with the help of God.

*Will you support the teachers and educational leaders of this congregation so all God's children may grow in faith and knowledge of their Lord and Savior? Please answer: We will with the help of God.

*Please be seated.

CE Director: Will all children please stand?

Pastor: You've heard the promises of your teachers and parents regarding your Christian education. On behalf of our church, I now ask you:

*Will you commit your time and attention to attending Sunday school and other educational opportunities during the coming year? Please answer: We will with the help of God.

*Will you receive God's Word from your teachers and parents as a gift from God? Please answer: We will with the help of God.

*Will you show love and respect to your teachers and parents, realizing that they're God's representatives in your lives? Please answer: We will with the help of God.

CE Director: Will the congregation please stand and hold hands as we acknowledge our partnership in the task of Christian education?

Pastor: God has entrusted us as a congregation with the responsibility of providing Christian education for all our members. Recognizing your membership in this body of Christ, I now ask you:

*Will you support with your prayers and your gifts the educational ministries of this congregation during the coming year? Please answer: We will with the help of God.

*Will you join with your fellow saints in the study of God's Word through participation in worship and educational opportunities during the coming year? Please answer: We will with the help of God.

*Will you regularly pray for your pastor, church staff, and educational leaders as we celebrate our partnership in the body of Christ? Please answer: We will with the help of God.

Let us pray: O God, you sent your Son as a teacher and example of righteousness on this earth. Send your Holy Spirit now to empower these teachers, leaders, students, and parents. Give these children a lively joy in their learning. To teachers, give wisdom and skill in their leading. Bless families as they nurture one another. Give strength to all of us as we link hands to serve you and support one another. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS
Make this event even more special by giving participants a copy of their group's promises. Have someone calligraphy each group's questions as statements on separate sheets of paper. For example, transform a question into a promise, such as "I will regularly pray for my pastor, church staff, and educational leaders." Photocopy these onto parchment-colored paper. Roll each paper as a scroll and tie it with a ribbon. Distribute the statements to the appropriate people after the worship service.
