5 Uncommon Questions Kids Ask About God

If you’ve been in children’s ministry for any amount of time, you know there are a lot of questions kids ask about God. And the range of depth is incredible.

I’ve heard silly questions like “What did Jesus do without television?” to deep questions like “If God knew humans were going to mess up, why did God create us?” Kids love to question everything, and each time a question is raised, it gives you a better chance to explain God’s love for them.

That was the idea behind the book: Quick Children’s Sermons: Will My Dog Be in Heaven? This book answers questions kids really want answered–the everyday stuff they think about as they discover who God is and struggle to make sense of a confusing, overwhelming world. This book tackles questions about God, Jesus, the Bible, and life in general with wise, witty, and fun answers and interactive experiences.

I’ve used this book with my kids before…and I actually just read through it for myself. I’ve picked out a few of my favorite questions and summarized the answers. Here are five uncommon questions kids ask about God:

When does God eat dinner? Quick answer: God doesn’t need food, water, or shelter because he is Spirit. But God knows we need those things, and God promises to give us everything we need. Follow up with Philippians 4:19.

Where does God go for his summer vacation? Quick answer: Do you ever think God would lie to take a break from us? In Psalm 139:7-10, David describes how God is everywhere. God doesn’t just “camp out” in one place or another. God is everywhere at all times. He never takes a vacation or day off! He’s always there for us!

How can God listen to everyone at the same time? Quick answer: We can’t hear everyone at once, but God can. God can listen to all of us at the same time. We can’t explain how God hears so much at once, but we know it’s true because the Bible tells us it’s true in 1 John 5:14.

Does God like me better than my brother? Quick answer: In Romans 2:11 we read that God doesn’t show favoritism. God loves us, even if we aren’t the most fantastic kids in the world. Let’s thank God for not choosing favorites.

Are there shortcuts to heaven? Quick answer: People like taking shortcuts to make things easier, but there are no shortcuts when it comes to heaven. Luckily, God has made it super easy to find heaven. In John 14:6, we see that Jesus is the key to going to heaven. Jesus wants to be your forever friend! ***
