3 Sure-Fire Things That Will Tear Apart Your Team

You might be surprised to learn that the three things that’ll tear apart your team aren’t lack of creativity, strategy, or excellence. There are three things you must have if your team is to serve God faithfully. If you have the opposite of these three things in Philippians 2:1-5, your team is in trouble. Pray and fight against these three things.

3 Sure-Fire Things That Will Tear Apart Your Team

Lack of Team Unity

Paul wrote, “Make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.” Infighting, disagreements, power plays, and secret games will tear your team apart. Pray and work for unity.

Arrogance

Paul wrote, “Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.” Selfishness, pride, arrogance, and self-seeking have taken down many a leader—and team.

Self-Interest

In Philippians 2:4, Paul writes, “Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.” The Greek word for “look out” means to literally “spy out.” Imagine having a team that is spying out or searching for ways to meet needs and serve others. It would be revolutionary!

In Philippians 2:5, Paul wraps it up by challenging the church to have the same attitude that Jesus had. And what was that attitude? It’s in verses 2-4: unity with God the Father and Holy Spirit; humility to become a human; and servanthood to lay down his life for us.

So the way to strengthen your team? To become more like Jesus every day!

  1. Great article Chris, and a great reminder for team leaders. I think lots of teams also suffer from leaders who don’t delegate well – though I suspect this likely stems from #2 in your list.
