GIRL MEETS WORLD

The Scoop: Girl Meets World is a spinoff of the ABC sitcom Boy Meets World, which ran from 1993 to 2000. Picking up years after the old show left off, Boy Meets World main characters Cory and Topanga now live in New York City and have a young daughter, Riley. Girl Meets World is set to debut this year on the Disney Channel.

Our Take: In a gender-twist on the original series, Girl Meets World is a coming-of-age story from Riley’s point of view. When airing old, syndicated episodes of Boy Meets World, Disney edited out content aimed for older audiences, so expect the same preteen-friendly approach to this new show when it premiers on Disney Channel. This will be one families can watch and talk about together.

EARTH TO ECHO

The Scoop: After a construction project begins in their neighborhood, some local kids start receiving strange, coded text messages on their phones. Looking to solve this mystery, a group of friends end up discovering what seems to be an alien. This sci-fi/ family adventure from Walt Disney Studios is rated PG for action, peril, and mild language.

Our Take: Finding good action and adventure movies that are suitable for the entire family can be quite a challenge. But based on current details surrounding Earth to Echo, the search may be over. We think preteens will enjoy the more mysterious tone of this adventure, and parents will appreciate knowing it doesn’t push the boundaries too far.

Details: The movie is set to premier July 2. A second trailer has been released, which you can find here. Heads up, you do get a feel for the action, peril, and mild language with the two-minute clip.

MALEFICENT

The Scoop: Maleficent, the scoundrel of Sleeping Beauty, is getting her own live-action movie. The film explores the untold story of the antihero and how betrayal turned her pure heart into stone. Angelina Jolie serves as co-producer and stars in the title role. This action/adventure drama from Walt Disney Pictures is rated PG for sequences of fantasy action and violence, including frightening images.

Our Take: It may seem that Maleficent puts a dark twist on the classic Sleeping Beauty, but the original film was relatively gloomy for an animated feature of its time. (Anyone remember the slaying of the dragon?) That said, Maleficent is a more foreboding story. Along with violence and scary scenes, some may find the magic and witchcraft themes less than magnificent.

Details: The buzz is building with this one. The film is currently set to come to theaters May 30. You can find a recently released trailer here.
